The Swadeshi movement (1905–1911) was a landmark in the Indian national movement, characterized by its economic nature through the boycott of foreign goods and promotion of indigenous enterprises [c1][t4]. It achieved a wider popular appeal than previous agitations, involving students, women, and the urban middle class for the first time [c1][c4]. While the movement received support from a section of the radical press in England (such as the Labour Party's Keir Hardie), it failed to enlist the support of the Muslim masses. Although prominent individuals like Abdul Rasul and Liaquat Husain participated, the majority of the Muslim community, particularly the middle and upper classes led by the Nawab of Dacca, remained neutral or supported the partition [c2][c4]. The movement also failed to significantly involve the peasantry [c2]. Therefore, the statement that it enlisted the support of the Muslim masses is incorrect.
