Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (1922–2011) was a legendary Hindustani classical vocalist and a prominent exponent of the Kirana gharana [t5][t8]. Born in Gadag, Karnataka, he was renowned for his mastery of the 'khayal' form of singing, as well as his soulful renditions of devotional music such as bhajans and abhangs [t1][t6]. He was a disciple of Sawai Gandharva and became one of the most celebrated figures in Indian classical music, known for his powerful voice and emotive performances [t2][t5]. In recognition of his immense contribution to the arts, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 2008 [t6][t7].
