During Akbar's reign, the imperial atelier produced several grand illustrated manuscripts. The Hamzanama was the earliest major project, consisting of 1,400 large-scale paintings on cloth. The Razmnama, a Persian translation of the Mahabharata, was also heavily illustrated with 176 miniature paintings. Similarly, the Baburnama was translated and extensively illustrated with over 150 Mughal paintings. While the Tarikh-i-Alfi (History of a Thousand Years) was a significant historical work commissioned by Akbar to commemorate the Islamic millennium, it was primarily a textual historical chronicle. Although some copies exist with limited illustrations, it was not a major 'illustrated book' project in the same vein as the Hamzanama or Razmnama, which were defined by their extensive pictorial cycles. In the context of standard historical examinations, the Tarikh-i-Alfi is often distinguished from the heavily painted literary and epic manuscripts of the era.
