The formulation of policy regarding Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in India is the responsibility of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), which operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry [2]. Formerly known as the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), it was renamed in January 2019 [3]. The DPIIT is the nodal department for the National IPR Policy, which was released in May 2016 to create a roadmap for the future of IPRs in the country [1]. Historically, different ministries handled various IP forms; for instance, copyrights were under the Ministry of Human Resource Development [3]. However, to ensure uniformity and synergy, the administration of copyrights and other IP issues was shifted to the DPIIT's ambit [3]. Currently, the DPIIT oversees patents, designs, trademarks, and geographical indications, making it the central authority for IPR policy formulation [5].
