The Pemayangtse Monastery is a prominent Buddhist monastery located in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim [t1][t2]. Specifically, it is situated on a hilltop above Gyalzing (Geyzing) in West Sikkim, approximately 2 kilometers from Pelling and 110-140 kilometers from the capital, Gangtok [t2][t4][t5]. Founded by Lama Lhatsun Chempo around 1647–1705, it is one of the oldest and most premier monasteries in the state [t2][t6][t8]. The name 'Pemayangtse' translates to 'Perfect Sublime Lotus' [t2][t5]. Historically, the monastery held the unique privilege of anointing the Chogyals (monarchs) of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim [t2][t5]. It belongs to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as the parent monastery for all other Mindroling lineage monasteries in the region [t2][t7].
