The interior part of Maharashtra, located on the Deccan Plateau, receives significantly less rainfall during the summer monsoon compared to the coastal Konkan region [2]. This disparity is primarily due to the orographic effect of the Western Ghats (Sahyadris). As moisture-laden Arabian Sea winds encounter the Western Ghats, they are forced to rise, cooling and precipitating heavily on the windward coastal side [1]. By the time these winds cross the mountain crest and descend into the interior, they lose moisture and heat up through adiabatic compression, which reduces their relative humidity [3]. Consequently, the interior regions fall into the 'rain shadow' or leeward zone, characterized by inadequate precipitation, often below 50-75 cm [4]. Thus, Statement II provides the direct geographical reason for the climatic condition described in Statement I.
