The National Commission for Women (NCW) was established as a statutory body in January 1992 [2]. It was created under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 (Act No. 20 of 1990), which was a legislation enacted by the Parliament of India [4]. The commission's primary mandate is to review constitutional and legal safeguards for women, recommend remedial legislative measures, and facilitate the redressal of grievances. Unlike constitutional bodies like the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, which are established via constitutional amendments, the NCW is an autonomous statutory body deriving its authority from an Act of Parliament [2]. The initial recommendation for such an apex body was made by the Committee on the Status of Women in India in 1974 and later supported by the National Perspective Plan for Women in 1988 [1].
