Which organelle in animal cells can digest foreign materials?

Lysosomes are specialized membrane-bound organelles in animal cells that function as the primary site for intracellular digestion [1]. They contain approximately 50 different types of hydrolytic enzymes capable of breaking down various biological polymers. One of their major roles is the digestion of foreign materials taken up from outside the cell through processes like endocytosis and phagocytosis [2]. For instance, when white blood cells engulf bacteria, the foreign pathogen is transported into a lysosome to be destroyed by its acidic environment and enzymes. Additionally, lysosomes are involved in autophagy, where they digest the cell's own damaged components, and autolysis, where they release enzymes to destroy unhealthy cells. In contrast, the endoplasmic reticulum is involved in protein and lipid synthesis, the Golgi body handles packaging, and mitochondria produce energy.
