The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners of India hold office for a term of six years from the date they assume office [t1]. However, if they attain the age of 65 years before the completion of this six-year term, they must vacate their office on the date they reach that age [t1][t5]. This tenure was established by the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991, which replaced earlier rules that had set a five-year term [t4]. While the President appoints the CEC under Article 324(2), the CEC does not serve at the pleasure of the President; instead, they enjoy security of tenure similar to a Supreme Court judge and can only be removed through a formal process of impeachment by Parliament [t2][t8].
