On a distance–time graph the competitor with the greatest distance at the finish is the winner; being “ahead” at a given time means having covered more distance in the same time; a steeper line segment indicates higher speed (so a runner getting steeper later is running faster in the later part) [2]. Applying these rules to the figure: A reaches the largest distance at the finish, so I is true. C is not the lead runner at every instant (it is overtaken), so II is false. D’s line becomes the steepest in the later portion, indicating D ran faster than the others then, so III is true. Thus I and III are true and II is false.
