India's first private sector howitzer gun-making unit is located at Hazira, near Surat in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Armoured Systems Complex (ASC) of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at this facility on January 19, 2019. This complex was established to manufacture and integrate advanced armoured platforms, specifically the K9 Vajra-T 155 mm/52 calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer gun systems. L&T had previously secured a ₹4,500-crore contract from the Ministry of Defence in 2017 to supply 100 units of these guns to the Indian Army under the 'Make in India' initiative. The Hazira facility represents a significant milestone as the first such private sector manufacturing unit for heavy artillery in India, moving beyond traditional public sector dominance in defence production.
