The National Environment Tribunal Act was enacted in 1995 to provide for strict liability for damages arising out of any accident occurring while handling hazardous substances [t10]. This Act aimed to establish a National Environment Tribunal for effective and expeditious disposal of cases arising from such accidents, with a view to giving relief and compensation for damages to persons, property, and the environment. In contrast, the other options were enacted in different years: the Wildlife (Protection) Act was enacted in 1972 to provide a legal framework for conservation [c1][c5], the Forest (Conservation) Act was enacted in 1980 to control deforestation [c2][t2], and the Environment (Protection) Act was enacted in 1986 in the wake of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy to serve as umbrella legislation for environmental protection [c1][c4].
