The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was established on October 18, 2010, under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010 [3]. The primary objective of the tribunal is to provide for the effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection, conservation of forests, and other natural resources [4]. Chronologically, the year 2010 falls within the period of the 11th Five-Year Plan, which spanned from 2007 to 2012 [5]. The 10th Five-Year Plan ended in 2007 [6], and the 12th Five-Year Plan did not commence until 2012 [7]. Therefore, the NGT was set up during the 11th Five-Year Plan period to handle specialized environmental disputes involving multi-disciplinary issues [3]. It is a statutory body that is not bound by the Code of Civil Procedure but is guided by principles of natural justice [3].
