The term 'Regur' is a local name used in India to refer to black soil, which is also widely known as 'black cotton soil' because it is exceptionally well-suited for cotton cultivation [3]. Derived from the Telugu word 'Reguda', these soils are typical of the Deccan Trap region, formed from the weathering of basaltic lava rocks [3]. Regur soils are characterized by their deep black to light black color, high clay content, and significant moisture-retention capacity [4]. They are scientifically classified as Vertisols and are known for developing deep cracks during dry seasons, which aids in self-aeration. These soils are predominantly found across the plateaus of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka [5]. Internationally, they are often compared to 'Tropical Chernozems' due to their rich mineral composition and fertility [4].
