The All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) was founded on October 31, 1920, in Bombay (now Mumbai) [5]. It was established as the first national trade union federation in India to represent the interests of the working class and to provide Indian representation at the International Labour Organization (ILO) of the League of Nations [4]. The inaugural session was presided over by Lala Lajpat Rai, who was also the President of the Indian National Congress at the time [2]. Dewan Chaman Lal served as the first general secretary [1]. The formation was a response to the post-World War I industrial unrest and the need for a centralized labor organization. At its inception, the AITUC consisted of 64 affiliated unions with approximately 140,854 members [5].
