The statement that European colonial rulers “handed over” East Timor to Indonesia in 1975 is incorrect: after Portugal’s withdrawal a brief declaration of independence on 28 November 1975 was followed by an Indonesian invasion on 7 December 1975 and subsequent annexation, not a formal transfer by European powers [2].
