In human reproduction, sperm deposited in the vagina swim through the cervix and uterus to reach the oviduct (fallopian tube), where they encounter the ovulated egg; fertilisation normally takes place there [2]. Standard textbooks explicitly state that fertilisation occurs in the fallopian tube [1]. More detailed anatomical sources specify the ampulla (the widened proximal portion of the tube, near the ampullary–isthmic junction) as the usual site where the sperm and egg fuse to form a zygote [3]. After fertilisation the zygote begins dividing and then moves down the tube toward the uterus for implantation.
