Q54 (IAS/2011) History & Culture › National Movement (1857–1947) › Gandhian mass movements Answer Verified

Which one of the following observations is not true about the Quit India Movement of 1942 ?

Result
Your answer:  ·  Correct: B
Explanation

On August 8, 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave the famous "Do or Die" call to launch the Quit India Movement. However, in the early hours of August 9, before the movement could be formally initiated, Gandhi and all major Congress leaders were arrested by the British.

Because the entire top leadership was incarcerated, the movement became a completely leaderless and spontaneous uprising. People took the initiative themselves to set up parallel governments and organize strikes, meaning it was not actively led by Mahatma Gandhi during its actual execution. Therefore, the observation that "it was led by Mahatma Gandhi" is historically not true.

While significant violence did occur, the movement was officially conceived as a non-violent struggle. Additionally, labor class participation was generally limited because the Communist Party of India (CPI), which controlled most trade unions, boycotted the movement.
