Well irrigation is most conducive in regions with soft, permeable soil and high groundwater tables. The deltaic regions of the Mahanadi, Godavari, and Krishna rivers are highly suitable because they consist of deep alluvial deposits that allow for easy digging and drilling, coupled with a high water table due to perennial river flow [4]. In contrast, the Peninsular India region is largely unsuitable due to its rocky structure, uneven surface, and lack of sufficient underground water [1]. While Rajasthan and Gujarat utilize groundwater, they face severe challenges like high fluoride concentration, depletion, and brackishness [3]. Similarly, regions with brackish groundwater in Uttar Pradesh are not conducive for irrigation as quality water is a prerequisite for well suitability [4]. Therefore, the fertile, water-rich deltaic plains of the eastern coast provide the most favorable conditions for well and tube-well systems [4].
