Phloem is a specialized vascular tissue in plants primarily responsible for the translocation of food, specifically the products of photosynthesis like sucrose [3]. While xylem is dedicated to the transport of water and minerals from the soil [3], phloem moves organic nutrients from 'source' tissues (leaves) to 'sink' tissues such as roots, fruits, and growing buds [2]. This process, known as translocation, involves the active loading of sugars into sieve tube elements using energy from ATP [3]. Unlike the unidirectional upward flow in xylem, phloem transport is bidirectional, moving substances both upward and downward to meet the plant's metabolic needs [4]. In addition to sugars, phloem also transports amino acids and other organic molecules essential for plant growth and storage [2].
