Ozone is produced through gaseous chemical reactions; in the stratosphere, solar ultraviolet radiation splits oxygen molecules (O2) into atoms that then combine with other O2 molecules to form O3 [7]. Similar photochemical reactions involving pollutants occur in the troposphere [3].
