The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the central government organisation responsible for archaeological research, protection and maintenance of ancient monuments and sites. Official sources consistently describe ASI as part of the Ministry of Culture; for example, the Ministry’s Year End Review and press material refer to “Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture” and its activities conducted under that ministry [1]. Informational summaries and ASI descriptions likewise state that ASI operates under the Ministry of Culture as the premier body for archaeological work and regulation of antiquities in India.
