Amarkantak is the common source for both the Son and the Narmada rivers. The Son (Sone) rises on the Amarkantak plateau and flows north-east to join the Ganga in Bihar, thereby contributing to the Ganga–Bay of Bengal drainage [3]. The Narmada also rises in the Amarkantak plateau but follows a westward course through a rift valley and finally empties into the Gulf of Khambhat (Arabian Sea) [2]. Thus Amarkantak is the place where two important rivers originate, one joining the east‑draining Ganga system and the other flowing west to the Arabian Sea [3].
