The statement that representatives of the states in the Rajya Sabha are elected directly by the people is incorrect. According to the Constitution, members of the Rajya Sabha are elected indirectly by the elected members of the State Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) using the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote [3]. In contrast, members of the Lok Sabha, including those from Union Territories, are chosen through direct elections based on universal adult suffrage [3]. The Rajya Sabha consists of 245 members, of which 12 are nominated by the President from fields such as literature, science, art, and social service [4]. Furthermore, the Lok Sabha provides for the reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) to ensure their representation in the lower house of Parliament.
